The role of Protein during Pregnancy & Breastfeeding (Includes Smoothie Recipe)

We all know that during pregnancy and breastfeeding nutrition is key! Protein plays a vital role in staying healthy and strong.

Protein, along with the amino acids that it contains, is an essential building block for human cells. During pregnancy you need round about 75g of protein to support your fast growing fetus as well as all the changes your body is going through. That’s about 25g more than what you would consume if you weren’t pregnant of breastfeeding.

Making sure that you consume enough protein reduces the chance that your baby will have  a low birth weight. Protein is involved in every function that your body has. It helps build and repair muscle tissue, helps produce hormones and plays a big role in the component of blood, skin, bones and muscles.

Not consuming enough protein can lead to health problems for both mom and baby. As an expecting mom, not getting enough protein will have you feeling tired most of the time and make it difficult for you to manage your daily task without tiring easily. The health risks for your growing baby includes poor muscle and joint development, poor bone development, muscle or bone deformities and a high risk of birth defects.

Having a protein deficiency is rare, but it is important to bump up your nutrition and not necessarily your calorie intake.
